A visit to Loxton, South Australia

Last week I drove to my old home town of Loxton in the Riverland district of South Australia. I grew up on a farm a few miles south east of the town and later moved into the town itself for a few years. I attended the local Loxton High School in the early 1960s. I visit the town from time to time to visit family. My parents used to live there (until they passed away) and now a brother of mine and two sisters-in-law still live there.

Last week I attended the funeral of the mother of a school friend of mine. After the funeral I visited one of my sisters-in-law for the afternoon. Before heading home I did a little birding down by the River Murray.

Next time I visit I must take more photos around this beautiful river town.

Thank you for the beautiful photos. I was in Loxton in 1965, working on the fruit blocks and the fruit drying co-op. I had the most wonderful time. Friends included Dawn and Ivan Bell, Alan Todd and the Dolans. Thanks again, Mike

Thanks for visiting my blog, Mike, and for leaving a comment.

Sadly, I don’t often get a chance to visit my old home town Loxton much these days, despite having family still living there.

I think I remember the Bells but not Alan Todd.

I am curious about which Dolan family you know (or knew). At high school and later at university I was friendly with a Robyn Dolan. We would often meet for coffee and discuss poetry and great literature – ah, those were the days!

After university I think she travelled to the USA but we lost contact after that. I often wondered what happened to her. Did you know her?

I’m 62 next week and she was about a year younger than me. I still have several books she gave me at the time.

    Dear Trevor,
Once again some wonderful photos. I certainly remember the river and Loxton very well. Robyn Dolan is a very special person to me and any information you could send me about her would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi there Mike,

Sorry – as I wrote in an earlier comment, I completely lost contact with Robyn when she finished university. The last I knew of her was that she travelled to the USA. That was 40 years ago!

    Trevor,
Thank you so much for your quick reply. It is now 45 years, or so, 1964, since I lived, worked, and fell in love in Loxton. I too write and have been, modestly, published. If you would like to correspond about wrting, Loxton, the past, I would delighted.

    Hello Sophie,
I could not agree with you more. All the people I met were absolutely wonderful. When I was there, a young teen-age Yank treveling and working, I wouldn’t have made it without the generosity of so many.
    Mike
