I must admit that poppies are not my favourite flower. But when I saw the results of the few photos taken at this year’s Floriade festival in Canberra, I have had to change my mind. They are quite photographic after all. Initially I took these photos to appease my wife, but now I can also see the simple beauty in these wonderful flowers.

These photos were taken during our visit to Floriade in Canberra in September 2007. Floriade is a month flower festival in the capital city of Australia. Tens of thousands of flowering plants, mostly bulbs, adorn the gardens near the city. Entrance to the displays is free and well worth spending three or four hours admiring the wonderful display.

How about these two shots of bright red tulips?

I think that the brilliant colours available in some of the flowers these days are stunningly vibrant. Taking the shots up close in good lighting conditions also helps.

Many of the displays of blooms at Floriade in Canberra earlier this year consisted of tulips and daffodils. One area, however, was dedicated to beautiful irises of different colours. The photos on this page are representative of those on display.

The beds of tulips in full bloom at Floriade in Canberra this year seemed to stretch on for ages. It was almost a case of sensory overload, with wave after wave of colour laid out in enormous beds in front of us. Choosing which way to look and what to aim the camera at was a major challenge.

Floriade in Canberra is an annual floral display in September and October.
