Our holiday in Canberra

September 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed taking photos of flowers at the Floriade flower festival in Canberra recently. The colours were stunning, the variety was amazing and being a clear sunny day I was able to exploit the colours of the flowers to the best advantage with the camera.

We also noticed plenty of other photographers trying their hand at getting the shots just right. Many of them were quite young and we thought that perhaps one of the local colleges had set an assignment based on the flower festival.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Floriade festival in Canberra during our recent holiday there. The scene was quite overwhelming, with flowers blooming in all directions. The bulbs and annuals had been planted in a special design, the planning of which took over 18 months. The designs incorporated in the display were all under the theme of “Aussie icons, myths and legends.”

Our visit to Floriade was one of the highlights of our recent holiday in the eastern states of Australia. The wonderful range of colours of the flowers on display is something to behold. I was amazed at the variety and numbers of flowers in bloom, all arranged in special patterns to be pleasing to the eye – and the camera.

While I did take a few overview type photos, I preferred to take close-up studies of individual blooms, like those show on this page.

Many years ago my mother used to grow daffodils. I thought that the brilliant yellow colour was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. In more recent years my wife has grown a few daffodils, and again I marvelled at the colours.

It was only when we went to see Floriade in Canberra on our recent holiday that I fully appreciated the vast array of other colours the daffodils come in these days.

I was almost overwhelmed by the amazing array of colours on display at Floriade in Canberra. We spent one whole afternoon wandering around the many displays of tulips, hyacinths, irises, narcissus and pansies, as well as several other types of bulbs and annuals.
